Dr.Salim
Daher R.
(Neurosurgery
Doctorate at Paris University, France)
There are several questions that patients frequently ask Dr. Daher when they come to visit him.
Success of percutaneous disectomy lies in the adequate surgical indication, this is, in the patient's choice. At lumbar level, there's a 91% of excelent results, a 7% of good or normal results and only 2% of poor or bad results. This last segment involves patients that presented no relief after disectomy; it must be said that there have been no relapses of simptoms in any case.
At cervical level success chances are even bigger, with a 98% of excelent results and only 2% of poor or bad results. We notice here an inmediate relief of simptoms right on going out the surgery room.
This may vary from a patient to another. There are several matters like patient's age, weight and type of job that develops; we know that a individual doing a office job can reingress quickly than a workman that does high effort jobs. Average resting time may vary from a week to 30 days.
Percutaneous disectomy due to its ambulatory nature does not need hospitalization, general anesthesia nor open surgery. All the above means drastically lower costs that classic surgery (laminectomy) which implies general anesthesia, hospitalization for several days and a recovery period of weeks or even months. It's estimated that percutaneous disectomy is about 60%-70% less expensive than laminectomy.
There are patients that must go into rehabilitation but they are few. Those would be patients that are ingressed to the operating room in very bad conditions, with a very strong compressive hernia. In these cases, rehabilitation is a complementary treatment of percutaneous disectomy.
Remember, you can also ask Dr. Daher any question you wish about hernia and/or percutaneous disectomy through Electronic Mail.
